Mayor Presents Black Man Clay with Award on Eve of Controversial Video Release
The Black Man Clay Show was honored by Mayor Bob Walkup and the Tucson City Council on September 3rd for winning the ACM Music Video Award. Today, a controversial new video featuring Black Man Clay's song "Stand Up!" has surfaced on youtube.com. The video features footage of Democracy Now! Host Amy Goodman being unlawfully arrested by the St. Paul police as she and her producers were reporting from the 2008 Republican National Convention.
Tucson, AZ (Billboard Publicity Wire) September 11, 2008 -- Black Man Clay calls the listeners to "Stand up! For your rights!" and sings "We're not going to take it!" The video shows the disturbing real images of the police state America has become, as captured Democracy Now!'s cameras.
Democracy Now! Host Amy Goodman was arrested while questioning police about the unlawful detention of Producers Sharif Abdel Kouddous and Nicole Salazar, who were arrested while they carried out their journalistic duties in covering street demonstration at the Republican National Convention.
The Ramsey County Attorney's office is in the process of deciding whether or not to press felony P.C. (probable cause) riot charges against Democracy Now! Producers Sharif Abdel Kouddous and Nicole Salazar.
During the demonstration in which the Democracy Now! team was arrested, law enforcement officers used pepper spray, rubber bullets, concussion grenades and excessive force against protesters and journalists. Several dozen demonstrators were also arrested during this action, as was a photographer for the Associated Press.
Producer and co-songwriter Eric Heithaus stated, "We made this music video to help create awareness of what is happening to our basic constitutional rights, freedom of press is a cornerstone of our democracy. I admire Amy Goodman very much, she is a great journalist and an American hero."
Today it is critical that you make your voice heard in the Ramsey County Attorney and St. Paul City Attorney offices. Demand that they drop all pending and current charges against journalists arrested while reporting on protests outside the Republican National Conventions.
