Classic Rock Band Walrus Observes Earth Day at Tulip Festival
The Walrus, one of the Pacific Northwest's premier classic rock bands, will perform original songs from its CD, "Uncovered," at the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival Street Fair Sunday, Earth Day. Among the Walrus' Earth-inspired songs are the psychedelic-sounding "Gaia," a tome to Mother Earth, and "The Garden," inspired by the 1992 New Age novel, "Ishmael."
(Billboard Publicity Wire) April 20, 2007 -- The classic rock band Walrus will perform Earth-inspired songs from its CD of original music, "Uncovered," at the Skagit Valley Tulip Festival Street Fair on Earth Day.
"Uncovered" is the Walrus' album of 11 original songs in the classic rock style. The CD features rock, pop and folk vocal arrangements and harmonies reminiscent of the Beatles, Crosby Stills Nash & Young and other classic rock bands from the 1960s and 1970s. The songs on the CD include "The Garden," inspired by the 1992 New Age novel, "Ishmael," and the psychedelic-sounding "Gaia," a tome to Mother Earth.
"The Garden" is Walrus lead guitarist and vocalist Joe Young's response to Ishmael's message of concern about species extinction and sustainable living on this planet. Young was moved to write "The Garden" after reading Quinn's book, which won the Turner Tomorrow Fellowship in 1991 for a work of fiction offering positive solutions for global problems. "Ishmael" is Quinn's story of a young man in search of a teacher. The young man finds his teacher in Ishmael, a lowland gorilla who helps him see the truth about human existence. Ishmael warns him about man's destruction of biodiversity, which may destroy the very infrastructure that is keeping the human race alive.
Young, who wrote seven of the 11 original songs on the new classic rock CD, said he took to heart Ishmael's message about sustainable living. "The future health of our species and the Earth depends on everyone accomplishing personal change and working together," he said. "The Walrus is proud to be celebrating Earth Day at the Tulip Festival."
Another song the Walrus will play on Earth Day is "Gaia," written by Walrus guitarist and vocalist Chuck Dingee with former musical partner Steve McGowan.
"I have always been fascinated with the Gaia Hypothesis, which basically says that the system of life on earth behaves like one big living organism," Dingee said. "What part do humans play in this living organism? Are we a cancer about to destroy her? Or are we the brain cells, about to discover what Earth's real purpose is?"
The Walrus will perform these and other songs at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 22, 2007 (Earth Day) at The "Rick Epting Memorial Stage" in Pine Square during the Tulip Festival Street Fair in Mount Vernon (http://www.downtownmountvernon.com/tulip-festival-street-fair.php).
