Kathryn Keats to Perform at The Mint in Los Angeles, July 17; San Diego Pride, July 21
Singer Draws Inspiration from Former Abusive Relationship
Los Angeles, CA (Billboard Publicity Wire) July 10, 2007 -- Singer and songwriter Kathryn Keats, who recently emerged after years in hiding to avoid being murdered by an abusive partner, will make her Los Angeles debut with her band, at the legendary nightclub The Mint, on July 17. Keats will perform songs from her new CD "After the Silence," inspired by her newfound freedom from fear.
Keats, whose birth name was Ellen Christian Munger, was in her teens when she moved to New York to pursue a career in music. There, she fell in love and began living with composer Kenneth Ford, writing two rock musicals with him and touring with the off-Broadway show "Let My People Come," not realizing that Ford was a victim of paranoid schizophrenia. His illness progressed to the point of becoming physically, ritualistically and sexually abusive. Ford held Munger captive for 54 days, culminating in a precedent-setting jury trial that resulted in Ford being committed to a mental institution for six months. Eventually, Munger fled to safety, cut off all ties to people who knew her and changed her name to Kathryn Keats, to prevent Ford from finding and killing her, as he had threatened to do.
Keats' tragic and ultimately triumphant experience has been featured in such publications as Readers' Digest, the San Francisco Chronicle, Bass Player, Music Connection, Your Life and Manhattan Society. She has appeared on The Montel Williams Show, done podcasts for several media associations, and was interviewed by nationally syndicated radio personality Mancow Muller. She was also interviewed recently by Todd Matthews, creator of Missing Pieces, offering support to families of murder victims. Keats has spoken and performed speaking at Symphony Hall in New York City for Unity NY, as well as Carmen J Day's Wealth 4U, Partners Ending Domestic Abuse with Wilkes Bashford at The Fairmont in San Francisco, and Jeans for Justice in San Diego.
The Mint, where Keats will perform on July 17, has been a fixture on the Hollywood music scene since 1937. It has long been known as a place to see up-and-coming artists, as well as established stars such as The Wallflowers, Macy Gray, Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, Joe Ely, Blondie Chaplin, Bernard Fowler and many more. The Mint is located at 6010 West Pico Boulevard. Other musical artists scheduled to perform on July 17 are Kurt Hunter, Leland Grant, Louden Swain, and Kevin Elliot & The Broken.
On Saturday July 21st, Kathryn and "After the Silence" are scheduled to play the main stage at San Diego Pride, hosted by the Consciously Social Campaign. Keats is thrilled to be part of Pride and to have "After the Silence" identified as a Consciously Social company. Consciously Social has emerged, like Keats, to make sure creativity and education can be simultaneously used to better the world. Corporations are becoming Consciously Social Campaign members as quickly as Keats is reclaiming her life.
